the room without walls you forgot about

the room without walls you forgot about

Did you know the last time you played in your backyard would be your last time? Did you know the next day you'd suddenly be deemed too old and cool to enter? When did we switch the blades of grass across our feet & mud soup for bed rotting & extra dirty, chilled pickle martinis? Do you think it misses you giving it the time of day?

As we grow up we forget the things that made life less dull. The aspects that add color. I’ve realized my life feels overflowing with substance when I connect with the innocent wonderer I was years ago. Growing up I was always in a backyard, or roaming the streets because my parents didn't get the supervision aspect of it all. Whether it was my friends or my own, that wall and roof less room held fantasies and scenarios a screen couldn’t imitate. The best part is that room would hold it all and not burst or run out of storage, you could always come back to where all of your collective imaginations became one to pick up where you left off.

Now I am not telling you to go out and spend hours making mud pies and playing restaurant, unless thats something that truly makes you happy then maybe that is what I am telling you to do. Go to your backyard, spend some time with the simple things that brought you joy as a child. Don’t open the same app for the tenth time in an hour and instead lay in the grass and point out the shapes you see in the clouds. Make a crown out of sticks and leaves and flowers and fully declare yourself the ruler of your imagination. Slow down and enjoy what you have.

childlike things to do in your backyard:

make fairy homes

create concrete stepping stones with pretty stones or personalize it with your handprint

build a fort

host your friends where everyone brings a dish that reminds them of their childhood & their favorite board game

camp in your backyard

collect leaves, twigs, flowers to make art with

catch bugs (and let them go)

Who cares if people find it childish or immature? As long as you complete your adult tasks, you should be allowed to keep the childlike magic alive throughout all parts of your life without backlash from others, especially in the safety of your own backyard.
